Johnson, Héber, Torrent Finalists For MLS Awards

Three members of New York City FC are finalists for Major League Soccer year-end awards that honor the league’s top performers.

Sean Johnson has been nominated for Goalkeeper of the Year, Héber for Newcomer of the Year and Doménec Torrent for Coach of the Year.

Johnson is one of three nominees for Goalkeeper of the Year. He is joined by D.C. United’s Bill Hamid and Minnesota United FC’s Vito Mannone.

As one of three finalists for Newcomer of the Year, Héber has been a vital component of New York City’s offense with his team-leading 15 goals and 4 assists. Other nominees include New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil (10 goals, 4 assists) and Toronto FC midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo (12 goals, 12 assists).

Torrent is one of three finalists for the Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Year award. He led NYCFC to the club’s first first-place finish in the Eastern Conference and a club-record 14-game unbeaten streak. Also nominated are Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin and LAFC head coach Bob Bradley.

The finalists were selected by earning the most votes in polling of three voting groups; current MLS players, MLS clubs (coaches, technical directors and general managers) and select members of the media. 

The Newcomer of the Year will be announced on October 15, the Coach of the Year will be announced October 23 and Goalkeeper of the Year will be announced October 24.
