Two minutes into second-half stoppage time, Hoy took a feed from Sarah Killion, beat a defender and curled a shot into the back of the net to give Sky Blue a 1-0 lead, and ultimately the three points in defeating Utah Royals FC.
The win was the second of the season for the Blues and first at home.
While the New Jersey-based NWSL squad has struggled to win games this season, six of the team’s seven defeats have been one-goal games.
“I think everyone is playing free and allowing their best qualities to shine through,” said Hoy. “We all just believe in each other 100 percent, not like we didn’t before, but we are taking it to a whole new level. I know energetically I can feel it out there, I think everyone can feel it from all of us to the fans.”
The team’s two wins come since the firing of head coach Denise Reddy at the end of June. At the time, the team said it was undertaking an external search for her replacement.
Sky Blue will be away at Orlando on Saturday, July 20, at Exploria Stadium, against Orlando Pride at 7:30 p.m. ET. A few days later Sky Blue will return home for the club’s World Cup Return Night to face the Washington Spirit on Wednesday, July 24, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Yurcak Field.
