For the first time in five years, the Hofstra women’s soccer team are Colonial Athletic Association champions.

The top-seeded Pride secured the title with a 2-1 win over No. 3 Northeastern University at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Hofstra (15-3-2, 9-0-0 CAA) also extended its win streak to 12 and its unbeaten streak to 14. The team’s last loss came on September 4 in a 3-2 home loss to Yale.

This is the fourth CAA Championship title for Hofstra. The Pride also took home titles in 2005, 2007 and 2012.

Hofstra started strong and took an early lead with freshman Lucy Porter again providing the offense. The native of Birmingham, England, scored her fourth of the season less than two minutes in with the assist going to Bella Richards.

In the 16th minute, Northeastern would pull level as Kerri Zerfoss headed in a feed from Valentina Soares Gache. Hofstra would regain the lead in the 32 minute as Kings Park native Jenn Buoncore would head in a free kick from Monique Iannella for what would prove to be the game-winner.

Pride goalkeepers Jenna Borreson of East Meadow and Ashley Wilson of Glen Cove each played a half with Wilson making three second half saves.

Hofstra senior Kristin Desmond, who was named CAA Player of the Year, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Juniors Madeline Anderson and Buoncore and Porter were named to the All-Tournament Team.
