Following the 2015 season when the Hofstra men’s soccer team won a conference title and earned an NCAA automatic bid, big things are again expected of the squad.
Heading into the 2016 season, the Pride are ranked number one in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) preseason coaches poll. In addition, senior midfielder Joseph Holland was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, after being tabbed the conference’s 2015 Player of the Year. Senior defender Harri Hawkins was also named to the All-CAA Preseason Team.
Hofstra finished the 2015 season with a record of 14-8, winning the CAA regular season title and conference tournament. The team also earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, the men’s team’s first appearance since 2006.
Holland led the team and the conference in points in 2015, posting eight goals and nine assists. The London, England, native recorded points in 12 matches, including having a hand in both goals in the Pride’s 2-0 win over James Madison in the CAA Semifinals. He also netted the insurance goal in the conference championship, helping Hofstra to a 2-0 victory over Delaware to earn the title.
Hawkins anchored a defense that posted eight shutouts in 2015 with a 1.10 goals-against average. The Cambridge, England, native helped the Pride blank national top-10 team Elon, 1-0, and defeat nationally ranked Syracuse and UNCW. Hawkins joined Holland on the All-CAA First Team at the end of the season.
