The Hauppauge Hurricanes are New York State Champions as they defeated Smithtown Bayern 2-2 (4-2 on penalties) on June 3.

The neighboring Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) teams met in the finals of the Boys Under-13 State Open Cup at Stringham Park in LaGrange, N.Y.

This was the third recent meeting between Hauppauge and Smithtown. The Hurricanes won during the regular season, 4-2, while Smithtown won in State Open Cup first round group play, 2-1.

As state champs, Hauppauge will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the Regionals to be held from June 30 to July 4 in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Smithtown received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died in 2016, started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980. It would expand to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland.
