The saga with de Gea and ManU head coach Louis Van Gaal began prior to United’s Premier League season opening match, a 1-0 win over Tottenham. Van Gaal kept de Gea out of the game day squad feeling that his netminder was “distracted” by continued reports of de Gea’s possible transfer to Real Madrid.
A report in The Guardian said that Van Gaal had not seen anything to change his thinking about de Gea’s status with the team.
“He remains out of the squad,” while there is a possibility of de Gea joining Real Madrid, Van Gaal said in The Guardian report. Sergio Romero, who earned the clean sheet in win over Tottenham, will again get the start in goal for Manchester United.
The decision to keep de Gea out of the Aston Villa match comes just days after the Spanish goalkeeper was included in Man United’s Champions League squad for its two-game playoff tie vs. Club Brugge. After announcing de Gea’s inclusion on United’s CL squad, Van Gaal said he was confident that he would be able to retain the goalkeeper.
