Overview: The past two seasons, the Cosmos were one of the Cinderella stories in the U.S. Open Cup, having twice defeated New York City FC, including a memorable 2015 victory on penalty kicks at Hofstra University. The story this year is much different as the defending NASL champions crashed out of the Cup with a 3-2 loss against Reading United AC at Albright College’s Shirk Stadium.
The Cosmos took an early lead on a 12th-minute goal from midfielder, Kalif Alhassan. Reading United’s Paul Marie would even the score in the 39th and three minutes later Marco Micaletto would put United ahead. The hosts continued their onslaught, as one of the team’s top scorers, Frantzdy Pierrot, made it 3-1 approaching the break.
The Cosmos cut the lead to one goal in the 63rd minute when Alhassan’s pass from the right wing gave midfielder, Danny Szetela, a perfect header. Subsequent attempts by New York were not as successful, as the hosts were reluctant to give up space playing deep, marking tight and using the offside trap.

What’s next:
The Cosmos will travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for an international exhibition match against Al-Hilal FC on Saturday, May 20th. The team will return to MCU Park on Saturday, May 27 at 7:00 pm, as they host the San Francisco Deltas.
