It was a successful road trip to Virginia for the LIU men’s soccer team, which culminated with a 1-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth University Monday night.

Junior Chris Capaldo of Smithtown netted the game-winning goal for the Sharks in the 56th minute. Senior keeper Matias Pesallaccia played the first 60 minutes and tallied two saves. Freshman keeper Demetri Skoumbakis recorded the first save of his college career and played 30 minutes.

“This trip was a great success not only for the result, but to build team chemistry and camaraderie,” said Michael Mordocco, LIU’s head coach. “Guys are buying in and finding ways to get results. Tonight, our guys managed stress by playing hard and being mature. If we want to do something great, we must do the little things better than our opponent.”

Capaldo, who led the Sharks with three shots on goal, was finally able to convert just prior to the hour mark. Following a corner kick by Anton Ocampo, Capaldo’s persistence paid off as his shot from near the top of the box found beat VCU’s keeper Mario Sequeira for what would be the match’s only goal.

The win over Virginia Commonwealth followed the Sharks dramatic 2-1 win over Old Dominion three days earlier.

LIU will play its home opener at LIU Soccer Park on Saturday, September 7, against Saint Joseph’s University. Kickoff is set for at 4 p.m.
