An early season battle of local rivals and Top-20 teams went to Adelphi, which topped LIU Post 2-1 on Thursday night at Motamed Field in Garden City.

The season-opening match for both sides started quickly when senior Stephen Megaloudis of Bayville found the back of the net in the 8th minute off a feed from junior Taylor Kaczynski of Dix Hills to give the host Panthers a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later Kaczynski would extend Adelphi’s lead to two with Paolo Marciano credited with the assist.

But just four minutes later the Pioneers would cut the Adelphi lead to one as graduate student Lukas Ostermann would connect. Vittorio Argeri was credited with the assist.

The teams would go to the half with Adelphi leading 2-1 with both sides combining for 17 shots.

The story would change in the second half as Adelphi and LIU Post both raised their defensive efforts and the teams combined for only five shots in the second 45.

Ostermann in the 69th minute had a chance to level the match, but his right-footed shot from a difficult angle inside the box was denied by Adelphi keeper Matt Apicella.

Perhaps the most eye-catching number of the game’s stat sheet was the number of fouls called. Referee Alexandrew Fochea whistled both teams for a total of 37 fouls, 22 for LIU Post and 15 for Adelphi.

The annual rivalry game was also the coaching debuts for Adelphi’s Gary Book and LIU Post’s Michael Mordocco at their respective schools.
