The Division II East Region final was a matchup of heavyweights as No. 1 LIU Post faced off with Long Island rivals, No. 7 Adelphi.

But the meeting of top-10 ranked programs was one sided as the Panthers used three first half goals to take control of the match and defeat the previously undefeated Pioneers 4-0. With the victory, Adelphi advances to the NCAA National Quarterfinal Round to face Charleston on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Park on the campus of LIU Post.

According to information from Adelphi, the win was the Panthers first against LIU Post since 1989. In addition, the men’s soccer team will make its first appearance in a national Division II quarterfinal in 41 years.

Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year Federico De Oliveira scored the initial and eventual game-winning goal during the 13th minute. The midfielder collected at top of the box and shot into the lower right of the net to put the Panthers ahead.

Some four minutes later, Alejandro Penzini fired in the second strike of the day off a De Oliveira pass. The tally marked the senior back’s fourth goal of the season while the goal and assist move De Oliveira to 15 points on the season.

Just before the end of the first half, Joseph Sanchez picked up his team-high 10th assist of the season. The midfielder’s cross to the center of the box found Florent Girardin who lightly headed the ball over goalkeeper Jesper Malmstrom’s reach to put Adelphi ahead 3-0.

In the 84th minute, Jordan Daniel (Westhampton) scored his first goal of the season to round out the scoring.

The dominance by Adelphi on the scoreboard was also seen on the stat sheet. The Panthers outshot LIU Post 17-9 (9 on goal vs. 3 on goal), and had nine corner kicks while the Pioneers had four.
