For the third straight season, the Adelphi men’s soccer team will play for the NCAA Division II East Region Championship.

The Panthers defeated Wilmington University 2-0 in a match played at Le Moyne College. They will next meet their Long Island rivals LIU Post. Date and time of match have yet to be determined.

Against Wilmington, Adelphi scored early. In the second minute, James Thristino of Port Jefferson Station would find the back of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. That advantage would hold until the 40th minute. The Wildcats Sam Jester would head one home to level the match at one.

Throughout the match, the opportunities for both teams were limited. Shots were even at nine apiece with Adelphi getting five on target. Wilmington was able to get only two on target at Panthers’ keeper Matt Apicella.

The eventual game-winner would come through a bit a good fortune. Dix Hills’ Taylor Kaczynski sent a cross from the left side into the box. A Wilmington player attempting to deflect the cross redirected it into the net for an own goal.
