A brace from junior Lucy Whipp and two assists from Samie Scaffidi keyed a first-half offensive outburst for the St. John’s women’s soccer team, which defeated Buffalo 3-1 in the Red Storms’ home opener.
The game started quickly for both teams as all four goals were scored within the first 32 minutes.
Whipp opened the scoring in the 11th minute and scored her second of the game in the 32nd minute to extend St. John’s lead to 3-1. Zsani Kajan scored the second Red Storm goal in the 27th minute.
Redshirt sophomore keeper Meredith Reinhardt got the win in her first career start, making five saves.
Kajan and Whipp each had three shots on goal and Christina Bellero had an assist and two shots on goal.
With the win, St. John’s improved their record to 1-1 on the season and 33-6-7 at Belson Stadium since the start of the 2013 season. The team returns to action Thursday night with a trip to Syracuse. Game time is 6 p.m.
