The stars were aligned for West Islip’s Boys U-13 team, which won the Arch Cup Platinum title with a 1-0 win over the West Hempstead Titans.
The match between the two Long Island Junior Soccer League teams was played on Jun 10 at Stringham Park.
In the second half, West Islip’s Carlos Lopez struck a 40-yard free kick that hit the crossbar and Drew McGoldbrick was able to put in the rebound. West Islip’s Matt McGoldbrick and Ryan Novara shared the shutout in goal. This is West Islip’s second Arch Cup championship in the past three years.
“It was a pretty even game. I thought that it would wind up a tie and we would go to penalty kicks but we got it done,” said Rick de Vries, West Islip’s coach.
West Hempstead added the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died last year, started the Sportsmanship Program of the LIJSL in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.
