Following a tough start to the season in which the Hofstra men’s soccer team went winless in its first five matches, the Pride is now on a roll having won three straight following its 1-0 win over Dartmouth.
Played under the lights at Hofstra Soccer Stadium, the visitors from New Hampshire finished the match with an advantage in shots (15-6) and shots on goal (4-2), but the Pride’s defense stayed strong throughout and kept the Big Green off the scoreboard.
Hofstra goalkeeper Alex Ashton was credited with four saves and his fourth consecutive clean sheet and has now not allowed a goal in 382:17.
The lone tally of the night came from a Long Island connection in the 74th minute as New Hyde Park’s Matthew Vowinkel headed in a cross from Hicksville’s Storm Strongin for his fourth goal of the season.
In the final 16 minutes, however, Dartmouth kept pressing for the tying goal attempting nine shots over the final quarter-hour, but only two found their way to Ashton.
Hofstra will be back in action Saturday when the team opens its Colonial Athletic Association schedule against UNCW. Due to the effects of Hurricane Florence on the Wilmington area, the game will be played in Elon, North Carolina, at 12 p.m.
