Coming off its 3-1 win Wednesday over Surf, the Rough Riders will meet the Rochester Lady Lancers for the second time this season. The match at Hofstra University kicks off at 5 p.m. In their meeting last weekend in Rochester, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw at Marina Auto Stadium.
In its match Wednesday vs. Surf, Long Island found itself behind early when Melissa Menta’s 20th-minute goal gave New York a 1-0 lead. That goal would hold until the match’s final 30 minutes when the Rough Riders offense stormed to life. Taylor Elliott netted the equalizer in the 64th minute, Kerianne Scorce scored the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute and Marisa Garcia rounded out the second half scoring barrage with a stoppage-time tally.
Also on Saturday, New York Surf hit the road looking for its second win of the season as they meet New England Mutiny at Agawam High School in Agawam, Mass. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m.
Surf is seeing its hopes for a postseason bid dwindling and need points this weekend if they hope to play beyond Week 10. After an opening week victory at Worcester, the Surf are 0-3-1 with their lone draw coming at New Jersey Copa last week.
Surf has already lost a match to Long Island during Week V play, as, despite Menta giving them a lead in the 20th minute, they gave up three second-half goals to leave empty-handed. Having Menta in good scoring form is a big plus, as the former NYU striker has scored in back-to-back matches. The team, however, needs more goals coming from its other strikers, including Furtuna Velaj, as her 2017 campaign netted her five goals but just one so far in 2018.
The Mutiny and the Surf split their regular season meetings last year, with the home team winning each contest. This is the only meeting between the teams this season.
Surf then return home to SUNY Maritime on Sunday to face the Lady Lancers of Rochester. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
