Two Rough Riders, Surf Named To UWS All-East Second Team

The Long Island Rough Riders and New York Surf may have missed out on the United Women’s Soccer postseason, but both teams have two players named to the league’s All-East Conference Second Team.

Defender Taylor Groth and forward Kayla Saager from the Rough Riders and midfielder Jenna Menta and forward Furtuna Velaj from Surf were among the 11 named to the second team.

Long Island (5-3-2) finished the season with 17 points, just two behind second place Connecticut Fusion and four behind first-place Inferno Rush. Surf (4-4-2) finished with 14 points in what proved to be a highly competitive East Conference.

In addition, for Stony Brook standout Brooke Barbuto of the Rochester Lady Lancers was named the East Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Barbuto started all 10 matches for Rochester this past season playing in every minute while scoring eight goals and chipping in with two assists. She is one of only three players to be named to a UWS Team of the Week three times and also netted an honorable mention.
