Tough UWS Weekend For Rough Riders, Surf

UWS, United Women's Soccer, UWS, Long Island Rough Riders, New York Surf

It was a lost weekend for both local teams during Week 2 play in United Women’s Soccer (UWS).

With Western New York Flash the common opponent over the past weekend, neither the Long Island Rough Riders nor New York Surf could come away with points.

On Saturday, May 19, the Flash topped Long Island 3-1 at Michael J. Tully Park in New Hyde Park. Western New York forward and 2017 All-UWS selection Carissima Cutrona picked up where she left off from 2017 with two goals for the Flash. She opened the scoring in the 36th minute on a pass from forward Maddie Pezzino.

The Flash would double its lead just two minutes later on a goal from Anna Davies. Long Island’s Erica Modena cut the lead to one in the 48th minute. However, Cutrona restored Western New York’s two-goal lead in the 70th minute.

The loss was the first for Long Island, which had its season-opening match on May 12 against New Jersey Copa postponed because of inclement weather. The match has been rescheduled to June 27th.

Long Island and Western New York will meet again on June 2 when the Rough Riders travel to D’Youville College in Buffalo.

The scheduled meeting between New York Surf and Western New York ended before it started. The field at SUNY Maritime University was double-booked leading to a 3-0 forfeit by Surf, as per league rules.

With the forfeit, New York falls to 1-1 on the season. They return to the pitch this Saturday with a home match against the Inferno Rush.
