The St. John’s men’s soccer team opened Big East Conference play with a 1-0 home win over local rival Seton Hall Saturday night at Belson Stadium.

The win moved the Red Storm to 4-3-0 on the season and the match was the 40th all-time between the two schools. St. John’s owns a clear edge all-time in the matchup 25-12-3.

Despite 25 shots between the two teams, only one would find its way across the goal line. In the 10th minute, junior Matt Forster would wrinkle the net after taking a long pass from freshman Brandon Knapp. The goal was Forster’s fourth of the season, which is a new career high for the junior from Bedford, England, while the assist was the second for Knapp in 2018.

Senior goalkeeper Lenny Wilson picked up his second clean sheet victory in as many tries, making a season-high five saves and improving his record to 3-1-0 on the campaign.

The St. John’s backline of Knapp, Johan Aquilon, Kadeem Joseph and Tiago Teixeira neutralized a number of Seton Hall threats in the final half.  Joseph, a junior college transfer from Herkimer Community College, made his Red Storm debut on Saturday.

Athit Berg and Mauricio Rivas each played the full 90 minutes in the defensive midfield for St. John’s, helping the team record its second shutout in its last three tries.

St. John’s returns to action on Friday night, traveling to Cincinnati for a 7 p.m. showdown with Xavier.  The game will be broadcast on the Big East Digital Network.
