Christina Bellero and Claudia Cagnina grew up just miles from each other on Long Island and played their college soccer together at St. John’s.
After finishing their senior season for head coach Ian Stone this past fall, Bellero of Melville and Cagnina of Lindenhurst are now eligible for the 2019 National Women’s Soccer League College Draft. The annual selection of top college players will be held on January 10 at the United Soccer Coaches convention at McCormick Place in Chicago.
Bellero played an integral part in the Johnnies’ attack this past season. A graduate of Half Hollow Hills East High School, she finished the 2018 season second on the Red Storm in goals with six and had four assists.
In her four seasons in Queens, Bellero finished her collegiate career with 20 goals and 51 points to rank in the top-10 for the St. John’s women’s soccer program in both categories.
During her senior season with St. John’s, Cagnina played substantial minutes for the Red Storm, starting in all 19 matches. Her pinnacle moment of the year came on Sept. 2 against Stony Brook. The Lindenhurst High School graduate dished out a career-high three assists, just one off the program record set by Jennifer Contesini in 1995, and again by Marissa Stork in 1999.
Bellero and Cagnina were both named to the All-Big East Second Team.
