Coming off the summer PDL season when Brian Saramago was named to the league’s All-Eastern Conference Team, the New Hyde Park native will begin his junior season at Loyola (Maryland) on the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
Saramago is one of 32 Division I men’s soccer players named to the list by United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.
“To have a player on the watch list is an incredible honor for our program and well deserved for Brian, as he’s one of the top goal scorers in the NCAA,” said Steve Nichols, head coach of Loyola’s men’s soccer team.
A graduate of New Hyde Park High School, Saramago this past summer played for the New York Red Bulls U-23 squad and scored 11 goals in 11 games in the Premier Development League.
In his first two years with the Greyhounds, Saramago has been an offensive force scoring 18 goals and adding 6 assists while appearing in 32 matches. He has twice been named to the All-Northeast Region Team, is a two-time All-Patriot League First Team selection and was the 2016 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and one of just two freshmen named to the All-Northeast Region team that year.
Saramago also headlined Loyola’s first-ever nationally ranked recruiting class in 2016. The Greyhounds’ Class of 2020 was ranked 13th by College Soccer News and ultimately led Loyola to the biggest turnaround in Patriot League history, as the squad posted a 6-1-2 record in League play his freshman year after it went winless in 2015. He then led the Greyhounds to the team’s first-ever Patriot League Regular Season title last year.
