Red Bulls Top Atletico Pantoja In CCL Opener

Red Bulls, CCL

It was a good start to the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League for the New York Red Bulls, which returned home with a 2-0 road win over Atletico Pantoja.

An Atletico own goal in the 39th minute and Danny Royer’s tally in the 67th minute provided the difference for the Red Bulls. Leg 2 of the Round of 16 series is set for Wednesday at Red Bull Arena. In addition to its two-goal lead, New York also has the advantage of having two road goals.

The Red Bulls took the lead in the 39th minute. Bradley Wright-Phillips bicycle kick deflected off an Atletico player and into the net.

While New York kept the pressure on its opposition from the Dominican Republic, they were unable to extend their lead as the match moved deeper into the second half.

In the 67th minute, Royer would control a lofted cross from Kaku at the back post and found the back of the net to give New York a two-goal lead.

Luis Robles would earn the clean sheet without having to make a save.
