New England Revolution 2
New York Red Bulls 3
Goals: NY: 23’ Bradley Wright-Phillips, 55’ Daniel Royer (penalty kick), 90’ Gonzalo Veron (assist by Felipe); NE: 21’ Teal Bunbury (assist Diego Fagundez), 26’ Lee Nguyen.
Overview: Playing in New England historically has not been kind to the New York Red Bulls, and from the start of the match, it looked as if history would repeat itself. The Revolution outplayed the Red Bulls through the first 45 minutes but held only a one-goal lead at halftime. New York picked up its play in the second half and would eventually tie the match when Royer converted from the spot. In the 35 minutes after the tying goal, the match would seesaw and New England would fail to convert on several opportunities. As the clock hit the 90th-minute mark, a neat pass from Felipe found Veron and after a touch, his well-placed shot nestled inside the far post and gave the Red Bulls a needed three points.
What’s next: The Red Bulls next Major League Soccer match will be Wednesday, July 19, at home against the San Jose Earthquakes. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
