Just hours after announcing the departure of head coach Patrick Vieira, New York City FC named its new head man.
Donènec Torrent will be the team’s third head coach joining NYCFC from its sister club, Premier League Side Manchester City. He was most recently a member of Pep Guardiola’s staff this past season when City won the Premier League title.
Torrent is signed with NYCFC until the end of the 2020 season, taking up this new position with the team pending the approval of a U.S. work permit. He has been with Guardiola for the past 11 years, winning 24 trophies while on the coaching staffs at FC Barcelona, FC Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
“Though I have enjoyed a wonderful 11 years working alongside my colleague and close friend Pep Guardiola – it has always been my ambition to manage a team again and I really couldn’t have hoped for a better opportunity than at this football club,” said Torrent.
“I know we have a very talented team, I have watched many of the matches and I enjoy the way the team plays and I now can’t wait to begin working with the players on the training pitch,” he added.
Torrent takes over a team that currently sits second in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference, trailing Atlanta United FC by only two points.
