Major League Soccer’s Team of the Week for Week 12 has a noticeably New York feel as several members of both metropolitan area sides are featured after each team posted big wins.
Representing the Red Bulls in the Team of the Week Starting XI are forward Bradley Wright-Phillips, Kaku and Michael Amir Murillo. They are joined by New York City FC’s David Villa and Ronald Matarrita.
For the Red Bulls, Wright-Phillips had a role in all three New York goals in the team’s 3-1 win over Atlanta United. He drew a first-half penalty that was converted by Daniel Royer, which leveled the match at 1, and scored a second-half brace that allowed Red Bulls to secure the 3 points on the road at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kaku had two assists to extend his league-leading total to nine.
In addition, Aaron Long and backup keeper Ryan Meara, playing for the injured Luis Robles, were named to the Team of the Week Bench. Head coach Jesse Marsch was selected as Coach of the Week.
Following NYCFC’s 4-0 win over Colorado Rapids, Villa had 2 goals and 1 assist and Matarrita chipped in with a goal to secure the three points for the home side at a soggy Yankee Stadium.
