When Garden City Xtreme goalkeeper Annie Cunningham went down injured in the team’s previous game, the inexperienced Katie Gaven took over in goal.
But in the finals of the Girls U-12 Arch Cup Platinum tournament, Gaven played like a polished veteran helping her team to a 5-2 over fellow Long Island Junior Soccer League side, the Middle Country Bandits. The title game was played on Saturday, June 3, at Stringham Park in LaGrange.
Chloe Kobel and Katherine Hayes each scored two goals and Fiona Nicholas added one to pace Garden City to the title.
“The difference in the game was our speed and intensity,” said Matt Gaven, Garden City’s coach.
The Xtreme also received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died in 2016, started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980 that would later expand to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland.
