A year ago Dana Poetzsch of Hicksville was about to take her first steps onto the Molloy College pitch, not knowing her freshman season would end with her being named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Year.

Now a sophomore, Poetzsch begins her second season with the Lions women’s soccer team as the ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

On Twitter, Poetzsch wrote, “Blessed!!! Hope to make this year just as great!!!”

She was an All-ECC First Team selection and was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week twice and Rookie of the Week once. Poetzsch was also named Molloy’s Freshman Female Athlete of the Year.

Poetzsch received the honor the same day the conference released its Preseason Poll in which her Molloy team was selected fourth with a total of 63 points. LIU Post with 93 points and four first-place votes was picked to finish second and NYIT with 60 points was selected fifth. Mercy with 94 points and five first-place votes was selected first.

Molloy opens its season Thursday, August 30, against Merrimack at the Merrimack Tournament. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
