Goalkeeper Ryan McGovern made four saves on penalty kicks to lead Lake Grove/Newfield United to a 2-1 shootout win over Levittown Gunners in the Boys U-17 State Open Cup final played recently at Lagrange, N.Y.

The see-saw match saw Lake Grove/Newfield absorb pressure from Levittown during the first 15 minutes and then turn on its offense and take a 3-0 lead over the Gunners. However, Levittown would battle back and draw level, which ultimately would lead to the teams having to decide the match in a shootout.

“It was Levittown the first 15 minutes, then we went up 3-0,” said Frank Stagnitta, Lake Grove/Newfield’s coach. “We then became too fancy and they caught us.”

Olsen Aluc, Tyler Rosenfeld and Olvin Yanes scored for Lake Grove/Newfield in regulation while Steven Rojas and Nicholas Pozo scored in the shootout. With the win, United brings the Jose Vargas Cup back to Suffolk County.

Lake Grove/Newfield will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the Regionals from June 29 to July 3 in Spotsylvania, Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.
