In a rematch of the 2018 final, Lake Grove/Newfield United won its second straight State Open Cup with a 3-2 shootout win over Alleycats 2004G.
The championship game was played June 2 at Stringham Park in LaGrange, N.Y.
The teams played to a 1-1 draw before heading to the shootout.
Sophia Onek scored Lake Grove/Newfield’s goal, just as she did in last year’s final. LGN’s Michaela Baresi, Madison O’Connor and Jordyn Calas netted shootout goals. Keeper Julia Darby turned in a big performance making three saves in the shootout.
With the win, Lake Grove/Newfield brings home the Girls U-15 Jack Bauman Cup, named for the man considered the father of women’s soccer on Long Island. Bauman was active in the Massapequa Soccer Club and worked to make sure girls had as many opportunities to play soccer as boys.
“It was an evenly-matched championship game,” said Kim Baverstock, Lake Grove/Newfield’s coach. “Our defense is very, very strong and I thought our midfield was outstanding.”
LGN will now represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association at the Regionals from June 28 to July 4 in Charleston, West Virginia, as part of the National Championship Series.
