With the start of the 2018 season two months away, NYIT men’s soccer coach Carlos Delcid has chosen his captains for the upcoming season.
Hicksville’s Dan Lembo and Martin Sundell, who hails from Enebyberg, Sweden, have been named co-captain for the upcoming season.
Lembo, a Hicksville High School graduate, appeared in all 19 matches for NYIT last season, tallying two goals and one assist. That included the late game-winner in the Bears’ 3-1 victory against Concordia (N.Y.) in the 2017 season opener.
Sundell also appeared in all 19 matches a season ago as a junior. He tallied three goals and two assists. He scored two goals in a 5-1 victory against Daemen on Sept. 30.
“They have great work ethic,” Delcid said of his co-captains. “They’re going to be an extension of the coaching staff. We’re looking for somebody to lead the rest of the players. Hopefully, we have 28 captains, but they’ll be the link between the coaching staff and the players in the locker room.”
NYIT’s full schedule is due to be released soon. The Bears are expected to open their 2018 season at President’s Stadium on Aug. 30 against Felician, according to NYIT officials.
“I am very excited and honored to be the captain next season,” Sundell said. “After playing for the program for three years, I think I can bring a lot of experience to the team and lead us to success this coming season.”
Lembo added, “It’s a huge honor for coach to pick me as a captain for the upcoming season. It’s good to see that he respects me as a player enough to name me captain. I know the boys respect me as well, being that I’m one of three seniors returning. I’m extremely excited for the season, regardless of being named captained or not. This program has taught me a lot over the years, and I hope to repay it with an ECC championship next season.”
