In another battle of Long Island Junior Soccer League teams, Huntington’s HBC Flash and Bayport Intense needed extra time to decide the Boys U-16 State Open Cup, won by HBC 3-1.
Brendan Slattery scored two goals — one on a penalty kick — and Joe Leon scored the other to give HBC the Livio D’Aprino Cup in a match played on June 4 at Stringham Park in LaGrange.
“We changed our formation in midfield with 10 minutes to go in regulation and that made all the difference,” said Brian Emans, HBC coach.
The Flash will represent Eastern New York at the Regionals from June 30 to July 4 in Spotsylvania, Virginia.
The D’Aprino Cup is named for the late Livio D’Aprino, a member of the Eastern New York Hall of Fame who also served with the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association and Eastern New York Adult Soccer Association.
Bayport received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died in 2016, started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980 that would later expand to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland.
