The New York Red Bulls have declined the contract options on 10 players, which includes Glen Cove’s Mike Grella.
The Long Island native has spent the past three season with Red Bulls appearing in 73 games with 16 goals and 13 assists. He enjoyed strong campaigns in 2015 and 2016 appearing in 33 and 32 matches respectively. In 2017, injuries limited Grella’s playing time to only eight games.
In addition to Grella, New York also declined options on defenders Sal Zizzo and Gideon Baah, midfielders Dilly Duka, Dan Metzger, Arun Basuljevic, Vince Bezecourt and Zeiko Lewis and forwards Gonzalo Veron and Brandon Allen. Veteran defender Damien Perrinelle’s contract expired at the end of 2017.
“We know how much we ask of our players, and these guys have all given a lot to the club during their time here. We thank them for their service and wish them the best moving forward,” said Denis Hamlett, New York’s Sporting Director. “While we declined options for Gonzalo and Vincent, we are in discussions to keep them as part of our club for next year.”
The Red Bulls have exercised options on Sacha Kljestan, Connor Lade, Aaron Long, Danny Royer, Sean Davis, Derrick Etienne, Jr., and Evan Louro. As previously announced, the club has opted to complete the transfer of Michael Amir Murillo from San Francisco FC in Panama following the completion of his loan.
Twelve other players are already under contract for the 2018 season, bringing the current roster to 20.
