When Chris Thompson and Joe Esposito played at the U-12 level, they each won the New York State Open Cup playing for teams from Garden City in 1978 and 1982 respectively.
Now, as coaches of the Long Island Junior Soccer League’s Garden City Warriors, Thompson and Esposito are once again champions at the U-12 level. On Saturday, March 2, the Warriors defeated Manhattan Kickers of the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League 5-o win the Boys-Under-12 State Open Cup.
“Our sons are Travis Thompson and Tommy Esposito and we hope they will be able to continue the tradition,” Thompson said.
In final at Stringham Park in LaGrange, N.Y., Travis Thompson and Peter DeBusschere (grandson of New York Knicks legend Dave DeBusschere) both scored two goals and Andrew Fuoco added one while Danny Psaki had the clean sheet in goal.
Garden City will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) at the Regionals from June 29 to July 3 in Spotsylvania, Va., as part of the National Championship Series.
