Freshman Nikki Bermudez‘s first collegiate goal will prove memorable.

The Oceanside native scored the opening goal in NYIT’s 3-0 win over Bloomfield in women’s soccer action on Wednesday at President’s Stadium. The goal by Bermudez came in the 16th minute off a pass from Dina Simonian (Westbury).

NYIT improved to 3-4 overall as it prepares to re-enter East Coast Conference play on Saturday in Old Westbury against Daemen.

“It was very exciting,” Bermudez said of her first college goal. “The ball got deflected by Dina, and I shot it.”

The assist gave Simonian 34 career points, which moved her within one of tying Lisa Ackerman (2000-03) for 10th on NYIT’s all-time list. The Bears all-time points leader is Tara Farrell with 81 from 1997 through 2000.

Fellow freshman Casey Luongo (Center Moriches) added a pair of second-half goals. Luongo, last week’s ECC Player of the Week, now has six goals in her past four matches.

“Nikki and Casey are both doing everything we ask of them right now,” coach Rachel Reeves said. “They are capitalizing on opportunities and creating so much offensively.”

Goalkeeper Jessie Sabal recorded her second shutout of the season and fourth of her career. The latter total is good for sole possession of seventh place on NYIT’s career shutout list.
