As the U.S. senior men’s national team continues to lick its wounds after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the first step in the healing process begins in Portugal with a roster of predominantly younger players.
The 21 players on the roster for Dave Sarachan, the team’s acting head coach, include a host of fresh faces and a few familiar names. The senior squad will meet the Portuguese in a friendly on Tuesday, November 14, at 3:45 p.m EDT at Estádio Dr.Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria. The match will be broadcast live on FS1, UniMas and UDN.
Calling the friendly an opportunity to move on from a disappointing 2017, Sarachan said, “As much as we’re still gutted from how things turned out with qualifying, we have to look ahead and finish out the year the right way. It’s an opportunity for many players who haven’t been in the picture that we feel have a bright future with the national team to get to measure themselves in a game against a quality opponent.”
Five players on the U.S. roster have yet to appear in a match for the senior national team; Jesse Gonzalez of FC Dallas, Cameron Carter-Vickers of Sheffield United (loan from Tottenham Hotspur), Schalke’s Weston McKennie, New York Red Bulls’ Tyler Adams and youngster Josh Sargent.
There are also 12 players on the roster age 24 or younger, including teenagers Carter-Vickers (19), McKennie (19), Adams (18) and Sargent (17).
The roster for the current European champions does not include Cristiano Ronaldo or Nani, but will nonetheless feature a host of players that compete in top leagues across Europe. In addition to playing the U.S., Portugal will also meet Saudi Arabia in a friendly during the International Break.
