Sky Blue FC forward Sam Kerr scored five goals in three appearances during August, leading her to National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Team of the Month honors for the fourth consecutive month.
During the month of August, Kerr extended the Sky Blue FC franchise record for most career goals (27), as well as tying the all-time league record of 16 goals in a single season (Kim Little – 2014). Additionally, Kerr also increased her NWSL career goals record to 42 overall.
Two other firsts that Kerr added to her NWSL resume in August include her becoming the first player to register two hat tricks in one season while also being the first player to score four goals in a single match. That night came on August 19 when Sky Blue hosted Seattle Reign FC at Yurcak Field.
After trailing 3-0 at halftime in that contest, Kerr scored four goals in the second half alone to lead Sky Blue to an improbable 5-4 comeback win. The Australia international scored in the 48th, 68th and 71st minutes before hitting the game-winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
That comeback victory made Sky Blue FC the first team in NWSL history to win a match in which it once faced a three-goal deficit. The New Jersey outfit also became the first club to win a game after trailing at the 90-minute mark.
