The NYPD, who play in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, are raising awareness for the NYPD: Widow’s & Children’s Funds, which provides aid and assistance to widows, widowers and eligible dependents of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The FDNY, who take part in the Long Island Soccer Football League, hope to use the match to spread awareness of The Sergio Villanueva Soccer Foundation, which was set up to recognize Sergio Villanueva, the FDNY Soccer team’s no.10 and central midfielder.

Villanueva lost his life during the terror attacks on September 11 and the charity serves as a way to educate the community on the tragedy and recognizes the hard work of the all those who lost their lives that day

Through the foundation, the FDNY soccer team has set up youth soccer clinics globally for more than 3,000 children. Locations include Hempstead, NY; Exeter City, UK; Baumholder, Germany; Rome, Italy; and others.

The FDNY Soccer team will be aiming to end a run of six successive defeats in the match-up, a winless run which stretches back to the first meeting in 2009.
