Two goals by Oceanside’s Julia Duffy were key in LIU Post’s 3-1 win over Franklin Pierce in the second round of the NCAA Division II women’s tournament.

With the win, the Pioneers advance to the tournament’s third round. They will meet No. 2 seed University of Bridgeport on Friday in Bridgeport.

Facing the top seed in the region and the seventh-ranked team in the nation at the Division II level, LIU Post took the lead early. In the 17th minute, freshman Terese Markelund collected a failed clearing attempt by Franklin Pierce and hit a shot from 25 yards out. The goal was her fourth of the season.

The Pioneers lead would double its lead 17 minutes later. Sophomore Erin O’Connor of Setauket carried the ball down the right side of the penalty area and found Duffy. From inside the six-yard box, she would connect for her 13th goal of the season.

However, a minute later Franklin Pierce’s Nathalia da Silva would score to make it a one-goal game.

In the 51st minute, LIU Post would restore its two-goal lead. Sophomore Sydney Pasquarella of East Northport would connect with Duffy at the top of the 18-yard box. Duffy’s well-placed shot and 14th goal of the season would find the top left corner of the net to put the Pioneers ahead 3-1.

Senior goalkeeper Hillevi Eklow needed just one first-half save to earn the win between the pipes. Despite being outshot 8-7, the Pioneers put all seven shots on goal. Only two Franklin Pierce shots found their way on goal.
