The New York Cosmos have resigned midfielder Javi Márquez who joined the club earlier this year.
“We are glad to re-sign Javi, as he has become an important player for our team,” said Giovanni Savarese, Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director. “Javi has adapted well to our system and has shown to be one of the most consistent players in the league.”
Márquez joined the club on February 24. During the first part of the season, he started nine out of 10 games, becoming one of two Cosmos players to tally two goals and an assist, along with teammate, Ayoze. Márquez as of June 15 led the team in shots with 23 and is second in the league in this category. The Spaniard’s efforts have been rewarded with three NASL Team of the Week honors and one Emirates Man of the Match award.
Prior to joining the Cosmos, Márquez captained La Liga’s Granada FC, where he played a total of 56 matches. He also played for Mallorca and Elche while in La Liga. Márquez was a product of La Liga’s RCD Espanyol youth system and represented the Catalonian National Team twice.
“I would like to thank Rocco Commisso, Giovanni Savarese and the coaching staff for their trust and support throughout the season,” said Márquez. “I feel happy to extend my contract with the Cosmos and feel excited to continue building a successful team along with my teammates.”
