In March, the Brentwood Scorpions and Oceanside Blaze met in the Arch Cup’s First Round with Brentwood squeaking out a 2-1 victory.
Three months later, the two teams would meet again in the Girls Under-15 Arch Cup Gold Final, and again, the Scorpions stung the Blaze 3-1 to take the title. The win was a repeat victory twice over for Brentwood, which also defeated Oceanside 4-0 in the 2016 final.
Cheilis Rodriguez scored all three goals for Brentwood even though she was marked by two Oceanside defenders during the match and she was substituted twice.
“Both teams had good possession and our girls never give up,” said Hector Santos, Brentwood coach.
Oceanside was awarded the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died last year, started the Sportsmanship Program of the LIJSL in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.
