Erin Gilroy is going to France.
The Bellmore native and current member of the University of Tennessee women’s soccer team was named to the United States U-20 Women’s National Team that will take part in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The tournament will take place in the Brittany region of northwestern France from August 5-24.
The team’s roster was finalized by head coach Jitka Klimkova after completion of a training camp this past week in Portland, Ore., that featured two matches against Brazil.
A graduate of Mepham High School in Bellmore, Gilroy is a redshirt sophomore at the University of Tennessee. During the 2017 season, she was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and started 15 of the 18 games in which she appeared. Gilroy had four goals and a team-leading nine assists.
She is one of six forwards on the roster that includes 16 current collegiate players and five youth club players who will enter college this fall.
“Honestly, these were some of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make in my coaching career,” Klimkova said. “The overall pool was so competitive and we needed every training session and game before we selected the final 21. We are confident that the group we picked is the best team.”
The head coach said many factors were at play when finalizing the team’s roster. They included each player’s influence and decision making in games, their training mentality and versatility and their performances in international matches.
