The Girls-Under-13 Arch Cup Platinum final was played in rain on Sunday, June 4, at Stringham Park in LaGrange. Down 2-1 after 20 minutes, the Bellmore Blue Angels of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) scored four unanswered goals to defeat the LaGrange Sparks 5-2.
Ella Brower and Lauren Richartz each scored two goals and Giovanna Barrett netted one for the new champs.
“We had only one sub but the girls really pulled together and got it done,” said Paul Schimmenti, Bellmore’s coach.
La Grange added the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died last year, started the Sportsmanship Program of the LIJSL in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.
