Nor snow, nor wind, nor the LIU Post Pioneers could stop Adelphi’s men’s soccer team on Thursday.
Goals from Patrick Guier and James Thristino provided all the offense the Panthers would need in its 2-0 win over its Long Island rivals. Goalkeeper Matt Apicella made four saves to earn the clean sheet.
With the win, No. 1 seed Adelphi (17-3-2) takes home the NCAA Division II East Region championship for the second time in three years. They will next play Atlantic Region champions West Chester (PA) on Saturday. Kickoff at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville is set for 1 p.m
The Golden Rams, out of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, defeated defending national champions Charleston (WV) 1-0 on Thursday.
With the threat of deteriorating weather conditions, Adelphi jumped out to an early lead. Guier put the Panthers ahead in the second minute as his shot from the top of the box found the back left corner of the net.
The lead would hold until early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Thristino of Port Jefferson Station would connect with a pass from Taylor Kaczynski of Dix Hills to give the Panthers some breathing room.
The match started under gray skies and the second half was played under increasing snowfall. Whiteout conditions became the story of the second half.
Adelphi out-shot LIU Post by a 9-5 margin in a physical game. Five yellow cards were handed out before a straight red was issued to the Pioneers’ Javier Rehberger Martin in the 86th minute.
