One New Yorker is out but another one is in as the New York Red Bulls Tyler Adams will appear in the 2018 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, while injury will keep New York City FC’s David Villa out of the annual gathering of the top MLS players.
Adams is the fourth member of the Red Bulls to be named to the squad joining Bradley Wright-Phillips, Aaron Long and Michael Amir Murillo. The MLS All-Stars will play Serie A champions Juventus FC on August 1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
MLS All-Star coach, Atlanta United’s Tata Martino, selected Adams and Minnesota United FC forward Darwin Quintero to replace LA Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Villa.
Adams, 19, this season has 17 appearances and 16 starts for the Red Bulls tallying four assists in 1,428 minutes played. Since the beginning of the calendar year, Adams has started and appeared in four of the last five international friendly matches for the United States Men’s National Team. In the last four matches, he has started and played the full 90 minutes in the midfield.
Kickoff for the 2018 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target on August 1 is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN, UniMas, TSN and TVA Sports.
